Week 1: Concrete Foundation Construction - 40 hours
- Block layout and firebox construction
- Laying out block rough-in for appropriate use of material, using correct types of mortar for project.
- Marking out, cutting and laying, a high-temperature firebrick lining with high-temperature mortar.
Week 2: Rumford Fireplace Construction - 40 hours.
- Throat and smoke chamber
- Placing and pouring a reinforced throat section dimensioned to the fireplace opening.
- Building in the damper into the throat opening.
- Smoke chamber layout and construction to accept a masonry chimney.
- Building a reinforced masonry block chimney with a clay-lined flue tile and poured concrete corners.
- Identify correct cements and material for both masonry and concrete.
Week 3: Rockwork Dry Stack - 40 hours
- Introduction to stone work
- Selecting and grading good-quality building stone.
- Dressing and facing stone for use in the project. Making quoins, corner stones.
Week 4: Rock Facing Techniques - 40 hours
- Laying styles and techniques used for best structural bonds and performance of material.
