Through out the Timber Frame Bents course students will employ the following skills as they develop though out this 4 week course.

  • Methodology, history design and vocabulary
  • Design and loft hammer bents
  • Draft shop drawings
  • Calculations for weight, volume and center of gravity of Hammer Bent Truss
  • Calculate loads for lifting tackles
  • Wood Tech- grades, seasoning wood and finishing of timbers
  • Engineering structural concepts
  • Corrected ‘virtual’  timber layoput on distorted wood
  • Tool ID, safety, use and sharpening
  • Understand mechanical advantage
  • Types and uses of timber joinery…wedged tenons, housings, sloped shoulders, kneebraces, templates, etc.
  • Construct, preassemble and raise hammer bent frame work
  • Construct a temporary foundation
  • Understand wall Infill wall verses Envelope systems (S.I.P)
  • Understand types and beam sizing for roof structures
  • Work as a team to complete project
  • 20% Theoretical
  • 80% Practical
